As fall quickly faded to a cold winter we look back on the year with gratitude and look forward to spring with joy. This was our first complete year without our fearless leader, my loving mother, and Becky’s partner in crime, Nancy Marshall. Becky has stepped up in her duties and taken the reigns with gusto and bravery all while putting out absolutely fantastic designs at a truly astounding pace. Our crews proved again that they are, by far, the best in the business. They continued their history of excellence creating some amazing installations and providing flawless maintenance work. Of course, Peg has the office running lean and tight and Rhonda has the operations humming along drama free. Nancy would be proud of everyone and that drives us all to be our best every day.

As the heat of summer rolls on our crews are hard at work. We added another hardscaping crew to get our hardscaping work log moving along at a quicker pace. Richard is our new foreman on our “small”er jobs while Pedro is plugging away every day on a massive retaining wall project that will take him and his crew through the end of the month or longer. Jorge and his masters of maintenance are always on their toes to keep your gardens at their best. Of course, Rhonda is keeping the Smalls machine organized and on schedule while dealing with whatever Mother Nature throws at us. Our queen bee Becky is working harder than ever to finish designs and get your bids out for approval.

It is hard to believe September is upon us. It’s time to break out the blankets and we barely had a chance to sweat this summer. Where did the summer go?

I cannot count how many times I have met with a client for the first time and their number one goal was maintenance free landscaping. Of course, I am a witty and charming person so my stock answer is “Well even if you use plastic plants they still need to be dusted.” I am here to say it. There is no such thing as a no maintenance landscape.

Happy Times abound around the Smalls camp. Our associate designer, copy writer, all around wonderful father, and Nancy’s son Nick and his lovely wife, Paige, have a new son, Walter Wawok. Walter joined us on June 17th at 12:32PM. He weighed 7 pounds 13 ounces and was 20.75 inches long. Nick and Paige are very excited and their 14 month old daughter, Addison, is, so far, content as a big sister. Nancy is ecstatic, of course. She was waiting quite a while for the first grandchild so the coming of a second so soon has her with permagrin.

We would like to extend yet another Thank You to all of our clients. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your continued, and new, patronage. Thank you for allowing us to serve you. Thank you for allowing our passion as landscapers to converge with our careers and path in life. Without our clients we might have ended up selling oranges on the side of the highway or writing parking tickets. As it is, we feel truly blessed.

We don’t like bad news, but here it is. Impatiens have been a part of our annuals program as long as we can remember. This year though, there will be a change. Downy Mildew, a parasite that kills impatiens, has taken hold so many of the usual impatiens are no longer viable. Several new varieties will be available next year, but in the meantime we will be replacing many impatiens with begonias. We would also like to warn you to be very careful if you choose to buy impatiens from retailers. Downy Mildew will certainly kill any plants that are not specifically tolerant to it.

Our website partner, LunaseaMedia, www.lunaseamedia.com, is working diligently to upgrade our website. New features will include, more social interaction, mobile friendly format, updated featured projects and a better organized news area! It was great before. We are excited to see how the next iteration turns out.

The end of the year is quickly approaching. As we finish our work season we just want to say thank you. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! We had a busy year. Our team is rushing to finish holiday decorations and we have one last project we are trying to finish before the ground is too frozen to work. We want to thank our wonderful clients for letting us do our best for you. Without your continuous support we wouldn’t be the company we are today. Thank you for letting our designers do their thing. Thank you for letting us tear up your yard and thank you for letting us put it back together the best way we know how. We are truly appreciative and look forward to serving you next year and beyond.
