We would like to extend yet another Thank You to all of our clients. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your continued, and new, patronage. Thank you for allowing us to serve you. Thank you for allowing our passion as landscapers to converge with our careers and path in life. Without our clients we might have ended up selling oranges on the side of the highway or writing parking tickets. As it is, we feel truly blessed.

Succulent; what a great sounding word. It rolls off of your tongue, like “undulating” or “juggernaut”. Succulent in Latin is “succos” meaning juice. Succulents store water in their leaves, stems and roots which makes them exceptionally resilient to drought. Succulents can be found in almost any climate from scorching hot deserts, which we typically relate to these plants, to cold alpine regions with strong winds and poor soil.

Nothing shouts Spring to me quite like the blooming of Azaleas and Rhododendron in May. Way back in our day (I don’t care to say how long ago) our dad Walter Small had Rhododendrons imported from Holland as small baby plants. To this day a few of those old glorious beauties still alive in LaPorte.
When planted in masses, the flowering stalks can be breathtaking. Rhododendrons can also be utilized as foundation plantings. They can be a backdrop for perennials. Small groupings of Azaleas can have a similar effect with a different texture.

I remember back when we were kids (ed. Really?) There were about 5 channels on the television and the only thing you wanted in life was for Lawrence Welk to NOT be on. My dad loved that show and since homes didn’t have a TV in every room we all had to watch what dad wanted to watch. That wish rarely worked out for us kids. Ole Mr. Welk seemed to be on at every waking moment. It was like the 60s version of The Kardashians, It was inescapable. Kids today don’t have a clue. To get away from the TV we went outside. We were outside hours upon hours every day, chasing lightning bugs, making snowmen, climbing trees, playing tag with work trucks, you know, the normal stuff of the time. We were rarely bored.

I don’t really remember when this dressing came onto the scene at Smalls, but I know I have enjoyed it for quite a while. We usually make it in a mason jar because it is easy to shake it up really well.

Okay, so this is a little pedestrian, but there are a couple small tweaks that can take a regular cosmo to a new level. If your bartender gives you one that looks like regular cranberry juice go to a new bar.

Life is all about perspective. Here is a new perspective on the polar vortex we had to endure this winter. The arctic weather we experienced this winter was difficult for us humans and we have the heating bills to prove it. Well, the weather also had a positive impact on the population of unwelcome insects.
